Entre o nativismo e a biopolítica: eugenia e antissemitismo nos Estados Unidos

Resumo
Este estudo explora como o antissemitismo foi incorporado aos discursos eugênicos, institucionalizando, assim, o preconceito contra os judeus — um sentimento intensificado nos Estados Unidos por uma reação nativista. A hipótese central é que, durante as três primeiras décadas do século XX, o antissemitismo norte-americano não foi apenas uma expressão de preconceito racial ou religioso; ele se integrou a uma racionalidade biopolítica moderna, moldada pelo arcabouço teórico da eugenia. Foi principalmente por meio de leis de restrição à imigração fundamentadas na eugenia que o antissemitismo popular convergiu com os interesses do movimento eugênico, o qual via o judaísmo como um problema biopolítico. Adotando uma perspectiva de história cultural que enfatiza os imaginários antissemitas da época, este estudo analisa eugenistas como Harry Laughlin, Charles Davenport e Madison Grant para examinar as conexões entre ciência, Estado e extrema-direita na criação de um antissemitismo "aplicado" — manifesto sobretudo por meio de políticas de imigração.
