A laconic Banquet. Connectivity, Affects, and Effects in Buenos Aires with the 1866 Subfluvial Telegraph

Abstract
This article examines how the installation of the subfluvial telegraph cable between Buenos Aires and Montevideo in 1866 transformed perceptions of time and space within the local community. Through an analysis of periodical sources (such as Correo del Domingo, La Revista de Buenos Aires, El Mosquito, and The Standard and River Plate News, among others), it explores how this technological advancement redefined everyday life in Buenos Aires within the framework of an emerging modernization project. By reducing communication time between the two cities from days to minutes, the cable not only accelerated commercial transactions but also synchronized urban rhythms with the demands of global capitalism. The press celebrated this achievement with metaphors like “electric veins” and “invisible bridges”, reflecting a fascination with instantaneity that permeated everyday language with terms such as “urgency” and “immediacy”. The study concludes that the telegraph was not only a technical breakthrough of enormous impact but also a cultural artifact and a new epistemic tool that reconfigured the spatial and temporal coordinates of the era, emerging as a symbol of modernity that rewrote the mental map of a society in transformation.
